Adult Rules

This is rather annoying.  I joined this site to try and get involved with some RPGing, and half of the ones I want to join, I can't because they're marked as Adult.  I'm FORTY YEARS OLD and I have to wait two weeks before anyone will acknowledge my age, even though there's no actual real confirmation other than a "thumbs up, they said they're old enough and can play now".

I'm not even looking for adult situations/language, just an adventure that interests me.

Adult Rules

In reply to DaCuseFrog (msg # 1):

Welcome to RPoL, DaCuseFrog.  We all go through this on our way to becoming real live RPoL Adults.  Raising Cain about it is not going to hasten the process, so you may as well kick back, wait it out, and then get on with all that Adulting.

Me?  I'm old enough I don't buy green bananas, but I had to wait same as you are now.  It's probably best to use the time more productively than just waiting around.

Some things you could do, since you're here in Beginners:
  • Tell us more about you.  What are your interests? What sort of games do you like to play?  You can find almost any type of game or game system in use here, so it might be worth the wait.
    ~
  • Check out Wanted - Players.  This is where GMs advertise for players in games they already run.
    ~
  • Check also in Wanted - GMs.  This is where players ask for a GM to run a game they want to play.
    ~
  • And check also Game Proposals, Input, and Advice.  This is where GMs seek input to gauge interest in a game they are considering before they go to all the trouble of putting it together.  It's also where anyone can go to seek advice or feedback concerning anything game-related.  (It's also a great way to find games in development that you can join right from their start.)
    ~
  • Hang out in Community Chat and get to know other folks who play and GM here. Within the Terms of Service, the floor in this forum is wide open.  Get out there and meet people, mingle, and maybe even make some new friends who share your interests.
    ~
  • Do you intend to become a Game Master?  If so, look into RPoL's GM toolkit - it's a mighty fine way to put together a play-by-post game, if I do say so myself.  There is something of a learning curve, but lots of folks here will be willing to help you learn.  The best way to learn is start a game of your own, or, short of that, visit games that are open to the public to see how they flow.

Pretty soon, you'll be saying, "So much to do, and so little time."

Happy Gaming!

Adult Rules

In reply to horus (msg # 2):

My problem with it is that I couldn't find anything in the Rules or FAQs explaining it, only a pop-up when you go to join an adult game.  If they would explain the reasoning behind the two week wait, it might make it a little more palatable.  Especially since it looks like the wait isn't actually to verify age or anything, just an arbitrary thing.

As for checking that other stuff, I've seen the Wanted pages, obviously, which is why I'm here complaining. :D

I'll look at the Game Proposals section, sounds like it might have some promise.  And it's been a while since I've been a GM, and not sure I'm quite ready for that yet.

Thanks for the suggestions, though; I appreciate the response.

Adult Rules

If I remember correctly, the two weeks was introduced to slow down serial offenders who would just keep making new accounts as fast they got banned.

I am not the OP, but I am new here too. Where can I find this GM toolkit or more information and help on starting my own game?

(Although I am probably going to keep playing for a while so I don't over-extend myself here at RPOL.)

Adult Rules

The reason for the two week wait is simple... the site Admin and Moderators decided to make it that way.  It's an automated system, and nobody can override it.

One side benefit is that it reduces the creation of extra accounts (which is against the rules, by the way) by people who joined the site to play in their friend's Adult game, then realised that they gave their real date of birth and it means that they are too young for Adult games.  "Oh, hey, I'll create another account and change the birth date by five years" was a fairly common solution to that situation a few years ago.  Not so much now.

The first sentence, not a good reason.  The second paragraph, now makes complete sense.  I'd have to agree that it is a good way to avoid skirting bans, age adjusting on the fly, etc.  Thanks for the response Ron.  I'll just be patient and hope I don't miss out on too much fun stuff in the next few weeks.  :D

The first sentence is just a summary of the long discussions we had prior to implementing this system.  Also, not meant to be entirely serious.

I figured... same with my response.  Gotta do SOMETHING to kill time for the next two weeks, so general ribbing was just how I chose to spend this evening. :P

Adult Rules

A lot (if not all) the seemingly arbitrary rules on RPOL came about as a result of user abuse.  The moderators like to be as hands-off as possible, but some people just can't resist looking for loopholes or trying to find new ways to evade restrictions.  Some of them are about protecting the site from legal liability (pretty much all the Adult game restrictions fall here, it seems), others are about preserving the gaming experience for the majority of users (hence the anti-spamming and limited game advertising restrictions).

I can see where, to someone coming in new, a lot of these restrictions have just been plucked out of the blue, but if you've been here long enough, you've seen some of these policies go from non-existent to fully enforced, and saw why...I've heard more than a few stories explaining why other policies, in place when I signed up, ended up being put in place.

Short of actually creating a game to play around in for yourself, or getting a friendly GM to make you a Co-GM (the only ways I know of to access the GM Menu  which exposes the various tools of a game to the GM), the best way to find out is to go to the Help system and read in the Games section under Running a Game.

Direct link to that section:  /help/content.cgi?t=help&page=gmingagame

If you have questions about being a GM, or using the tools, I'll try to answer from my limited perspective (there are GMs who have far more experience than I do), but that might be a topic better suited to another thread.

It's always worth a visit to the Chamber of Lost Souls link to another game to get a feel for why the rules exist.

Yup.  This should be on every GMs required reading list.

Re: Adult Rules

A thing to remember is that Adult games don't have a monopoly on fun.

The only difference is that in Adult games you're allowed to swear like a trooper and describe sex and gore in graphic detail.

If you're not particularly turned on by any of those things, you can find some perfectly enjoyable games under the Mature tag, or even the General tag - and you don't have to wait two weeks to join them.

Your characters can drop the occasional expletive, have sex, and cut someone's head off in a Mature game. You just don't put four Fs into a three-word sentence, and you don't describe the plumbing and the flying entrails.

Most folk probably don't want to do that anyhow.

There's plenty of fun to be had in non-Adult games and, contrary to popular belief, they're not overrun with pouting schoolkids.

Ever played Diplomacy? I had an absolutely riveting game of that here - under a General tag.

I agree.  And I have picked up a few games that are looking promising.  I just found that a few of the ones I've been really interested in so far have the Adult tag (and some of those were just to keep the kids away, not even content blockers).  It's just annoying, but I'll wait my turn and hopefully they or ones like them will be around when I'm ready. :-D

That is annoying, but I'm not going any further down that route...

Have fun, regardless. :)

Re: Adult Rules

Hi, DaCuseFrog.  Your original post was on 04 Aug.  It is now 09 Aug, so five days of your waiting period have already elapsed.  It won't be too much longer.  Meanwhile, you have the right approach:  go find some fun you can have while you wait.

That's the spirit!
