New Genre

I think a new genre should be SteamPunk.  You can look it up on wikipedia or something if you don't know what it is.

Re: New Genre

It's been suggested several times, and each time has been rejected.

You can just use the Historical + Cyberpunk genres to cover it - possibly include Fantasy if it also includes magic or fantasy races or the like.

Re: New Genre

I’m wholeheartedly in favor of adding steampunk as its own distinct genre.

Werewolves and vampires both have genres here, instead of just being lumped in with horror in general.  Pokémon/Digimon has its own genre, yet could be considered to be a mishmash of sci-fi and anime.  Super heroes get their own genre, and could arguably be considered fantasy, sci-fi, and occasionally anime.  Medieval has its own genre, instead of just being a subset of historical.  Arena and strategy could arguably be combined.  Cyberpunk could as easily fall under sci-fi.

Steampunk is a little bit historical, a little bit sci-fi, and a little bit fantasy.  It takes three separate genres to really express its components, whereas most of the above genres fall under only two, or even only one.

I’ve never understood just how, say, a “Wild Wild West” inspired game would be represented here — historical sci-fi western comedy is bad enough as it is, and if you try to make an arena game out of it…?  Good luck tagging that.

The above arguments have been made many times before.  They were as effective in the past as they’ll undoubtedly be now.

It’s unfortunate, really, but the powers that be have decided, for whatever reason, that steampunk is not ever going to be a genre here on RPoL.  I hate having to accept it, but it does seem to be a fact.

And, as has been explained before, all of those genres are hold-overs from the previous version of the site, where you could only choose one label to describe your game, so separate labels were required for niche games.

Now that you can select three, and can more accurately describe your game, it makes much less sense to add a new label which overlaps with other, previously existing ones.

Also note that "Strategy" does not necessarily equate to "Arena".

Re: New Genre

Hmm. Another thread asking for a steampunk genre. It must be Sunday.

Seriously, it seems like at least once a month people bring this up, and it is always the same. They whine about vampires and werewolves, try to explain how very very different they are from the other genres, and it always fails.

Perhaps it is time for a notice or FAQ to address it?

Re: New Genre

I understand the concept of grandfathering in old categories and wanting to avoid category bloat. However, perhaps one way of helping to avoid as many request for the same thing over and over would be to group the categories which would not have likely made the cut for their own category in the new system into a field-set that could be named depreciated.  They would still operate as categories, but they could also have their mouseover\hints potentially list the suggested replacements.  A link could explain the meaning of depreciated, basically saying you should combine existing categories to reflect your more specific genre's.

Just a thought.  Maybe it would help people understand better.
