Quit Game Option

As a player why can't we ,on our end, just quit a game? Many games the GM drops out and leaves it up or the GM gets on our back if we ask to quit and just request they just do it and leave it at that. I think players should be allowed to hit an Quit Game button, have the site ask us if we are sure then drop out without dealing with the GM.

Hell a GM can boot us, ban us and we get no say why not give some of this power to we the players it shouldn't be too hard to do.

You may want to check this out as it was already addressed once within the RpoL Development thread as a whole:

Within good reason, this option is never going to happen.

Sorry, but no.

RPoL's policy is that the GM has total control over who joins and leaves his game.  Just as you have to request access to join a game, you also have to ask the GM to remove you.

If you ask to leave a game, and the GM hasn't removed you after a full week, then you can contact the Moderators, via rMail, and ask us to remove you (include a link to the PM where you asked the GM to remove you).

The official solution doesn't leave the GM in control of anything. A player who wants to quit but doesn't want to tell the GM that simply stops posting and leaves everyone wondering if they're okay, not to mention forces the game to go on hold until the GM can read tea leaves to figure out what's really going on.

RPoL should realize that, on a play by post forum where people are not physically present with each other, there is no way to tell the difference between someone being temporarily busy, someone having suffered a personal tragedy, and someone simply avoiding potential confrontation. In all of those cases absolutely any player can cause a game to die for two weeks while everyone else is wondering what happened. While someone who is temporarily too busy or has suffered a personal tragedy can't be blamed for this, encouraging conflict-avoidant players to do it by not permtiting them simply to quit in silence is, in my view, wrong.

Well, unless you count the little matter of being in control of who has membership of his game.  Which is all we say that the official solution does give him.  Nobody can join or leave his game without communicating with him first.  Except in one special case - a player who REALLY wants to quit the game without speaking to the GM can always do something to earn himself a site ban, but that seems a little drastic.

Not really.  In most cases the GM is smart enough to notice that a player is holding things up by not posting, and will NPC that player's character until he returns, or until the GM decides he isn't coming back and kicks him.

We give the GM total control over game membership (which is as it should be).  What he does with that control is up to him.

Quit Game Option

It's also fair to note that that issue has been brought up and actually has been addressed.  I mean, no, there's nothing they can do to actually stop someone from just quietly never checking in on a game again, or even just quietly leaving RPoL.  (We briefly experimented with sending Cruinne after them, but it turned out not to be the disincentive we were hoping it would be.)

That was the main reason Jase changed it so that new posts in a game would pop it back onto your sticky list if you've removed it, but are still actively enrolled in the game.  People accidentally removing games from their list is really pretty rare; people "accidentally" removing games from their list was maybe too easy way back when.

So while they still can't force someone to go post on time -- they did make it harder to just ignore a game forever, and to encourage people to actually address it if they want to drop out of a game.

And all this, while - and this is important - leaving it so that if the GM has vanished and the game is just dead... you can still just remove it from your stickylist.  A dead game won't be getting new posts, so nothing will push it back onto your list again.  It's really pretty clever.

And eventually, the site scripts will auto-magically delete the game wholesale and then there's nothing left but a pile of 00000's on teh interwebs.
