The disease exploded quickly spreading from the major cities around the globe. Even before the death count began to move into the double digits, it had spread to virtually every corner of the planet. The first few years were utter chaos. Fear was the order of the day and life became a true struggle once more. Whole cities and regions were abandoned; rotting corpses covering the landscape and assaulting the very air. As private and government firms worked tirelessly around the clock, progress was slow at best. Too slow if mankind was ever going to survive. In a desperate and brave move, the remaining leaders of the world came together. Laying all grudges, debts and hatreds behind, they joined together for the first time in history. They centralized every single lab left operating and unified the world under one banner...save humanity. Then it happened. A key piece of the mystery was unlocked. While the bacteria itself was of terrestrial origin, several fragments of its' DNA (most specifically two that coded for surface proteins) were discovered to be completely alien in origin. They knew what had to be done. The only way they were going to find an effective cure was to start looking somewhere else, somewhere perhaps deep in the cold recesses of space.
