Galactic Apocalypse Sandbox Game

So I have this idea for a galactic sci-fi game where the galaxy has collapsed into chaos and an apocalyptic state for a reason (I have a couple of ideas), and the players are all individuals who have banded together to survive.

I would like the game to have a "fun" amount of book keeping for the players to keep track of, to hold that "survival" theme to the game without it becoming to much book keeping.

The two systems I'm considering are d20 Future and Savage Worlds Sci-fi companion, but I was going to check for interest and which system was preferred before doing so.

So, interest? Thoughts? I'm willing to consider other systems as well.

That sounds like a great idea.

I've never tried the d20 future supplement nor the scifi version of SW. But both would be interesting to try out.
Another system that works well in a scifi setting is GURPS.

You might want to check Stars without Number, it is an D20 galactic post apocalypse setting. More importantly it is freely available.

I think Traveler (if you are into it) also have some post apocalypse setting.

Traveller is definitley a system I would like to try, would people be more interested in traveller or stars without number? I have access to both.

There's also Starfinder, though it's not specifically apocalypse, it shouldn't be all that hard to make it apocalyptic.

I would argue that Starfinder would most likely not fit into this kind of game. Quite a lot of the characters you can make in starfinder is based somewhat on magic one way or another.

In reply to mole75 (msg # 7):

I don't see where they asked for no magic.

sci-fi as opposed to sci-fantasy.

Mostly sci-fi implies using a somewhat hard science approach with no magic.

Of course it's always debatable if the science of most sci-fi is really any different from magic (hello second law of thermodynamics).

I was intending for this to be a hard sci-fi, but I will look over star finder.

I appreciate the input, but in regards to who is actually interested I've only read one or two comments indicating interest, anyone else?

I'm somewhat interested.

I also thought of Traveller when I read the description. Traveller involves some ship upkeep and has a strong focus on trading and transport, which I would think would be important aspects of a galaxy in chaos. Starports with repair facilities and fuel would be rare, I would think, but any planet that could maintain one would receive the attention of the traders.

It also sort of reminds me of Alastair Reynolds stories: planets and civilizations rising and falling while the spacefarers fly above it all at relativistic speeds and in stasis, in ancient ships they don't fully understand themselves.

Hard sci-fi!

To be perfectly clear: Count me in no matter the system.

That's the one I'm familiar with, though I haven't really played it.

The career approach in Traveller makes a lot of assumptions about the setting. There is also point-buy options for character creation, I believe.
