Interest Check: Star Trek Adventure: Admiralty

Hello one and all!

I request the attention, input, and advice of my many fellow RPoL comrades!

I had a thought of running a game. So, give me your thoughts, good or ill. ^_^

Title: "Star Trek: Task Force ADAMS"
System: 2d20 Star Trek Adventures
Genre: Intrigue, Action/Adventure, and Sci-Fi
Concept: "Sometimes, you have to look at the bigger picture"
Rating: Mature

Description

TNG Era (2363):

Admiral's Log, Stardate 41337.02: I have been tasked with assembling a squadron of ships and officers to deal with the rising threat of the Romulan Star Empire. For years, their weapons and technology were largely dependent on the Klingon Empire. However, in recent years they have become more independent and powerful. Supposedly, the newly constructed USS Enterprise-D will be setting forth to show the flag across Federation Space; in the meantime and likely ever afterward: there will need to be a dedicated segment of the fleet focused on countering any threats the Romulans have cooked up beyond the Neutral Zone. Thus, I have commissioned Task Force Alpha-Delta-Alpha-Mu-Sigma: or for short "Adams".

Players take on the roles of Starfleet officers in the Admiral's personal staff, his flagship, and commanders of ships that are part of Task Force ADAMS. The GM will control the Admiral while the players will ferret out and deal with the threats on an interstellar scale.

This game uses the Star Trek Adventures Main Rulebook as well as the Command Division book primarily.

Players need not have the books (GM will manage the bulk of the rules as needed); though having at least the quick-start rules (which are free) is recommended.

If I have interest from at least three people, I will form the game and call for RTJs. Otherwise I am open to questions, comments, and concerns all.

One of the big problems with Star Trek games is that they focus so heavily on the federation, and in particular humans, do you plan to allow players to play non humans and or represent federation allies not specifically part of the Star Fleet?

In reply to Hendell (msg # 2):

Can definitely play non-human or non-human allies. Even a Romulan (though you'd have to be a defector of course.) Especially with the scope of the game, the Federation has to turn to whomever they can to meet the rising Romulan threat.

Hey! I just realized, with that idea of non-Starfleet characters: I could see some of the members of the Task Force being non-Starfleet members. So we can bring in non Starfleet Ships too! (The books cover the specs for a LOT of ships, the rest I can craft as we need)

A setup that includes non-Starfleet characters might be better-suited to a period during or sometime after DS9 and the Dominion War, since those events made strange bedfellows out of former enemies. Ongoing shifts in the political arena would be likely to continue for some time to come.

It could even be taken as far as the STO era; pilfering that would give plenty of fleet-management level things to deal with, since the stories there generally involve large-scale threats of various types.

In reply to Syrris (msg # 5):

If that's what most people want I could spin and do a post DS9/Voyager Story. Different enemy and all. Probably stay just before STO though, it gets pretty hectic that time onward.

Most feedback I've gotten is TNG era familiarity. But if I get enough push to goto Post-DS9 era I can re-write....main concept is what I'm driving at.

Are you thinking of a focus on the political and grand strategy angle (mostly behind the lines), or fleet engagements (mostly on the front lines)?

The latter might actually be more difficult from a PBPost context because the PCs are going to end up physically separated (on different ships, possibly in different sectors), while the latter pushes things to a bit higher rank but means that the PCs will be spending most of their time in the same location, making it much easier to interact on a day to day basis (and removing the need to have entire NPC crews for every PC).

Focus on behind the lines with openings for people who want to take up fleet engagements. They'll only be so many ships the Admiral can support to start.

So each PC would be flag rank (commodore, maybe rear admiral), each responsible for one of the (sub)sectors surrounding the starbase that the admiral has set up their HQ on? This would give each PC their own theater to worry about as part of a bigger plan and also allow for occasional excursions without getting too far away from one another.

I realize some folks are more attached to one exact timeline of events or another but really the setting is robust enough to manage a bit of wiggle room for events off of a fairly small path through which the main story events travel.

If we want to explore some of the empty space between main events the year doesn't make a whole lot of difference.
