NWOD mage game with possible low number crossover PCs

I have been planning a mage the awakening game for a while, and I had a thought.  The game will center on a cabal in new york city dealing with the many threats and situations surrounding their powerful sanctum.

in thinking through some of the situations, I thought of possibly including a few PCs as non-mages that the mages would interact with.  story liaisons, of sorts, between the mages and vampires, for instance, or werewolves.

my only hesitation is that those particular PCs would likely be playing solo for chunks at a time, interacting with their character's worlds on their own while the mages deal with other things.  If I did do it, I would try to make it so the non-mages intersected with the mages on a regular basis, but I don't think it would be all the time.

Does this sound appealing to people?  or does it sound like those PCs would be stuck out of the limelight too much?

The simple answer is to only have active play take place when the non mages are interacting with the mages.

Both sides have time between 'events' or some layer of back channel communication in their own thread or PM but the focus of the story and plot progression only takes place in shared RP environments where even if someone opts out it is a choice not a requirement.

Also be sure to clearly indicate both the starting XP value of the mages as they come from a powerful sanctum, and a higher XP value for the non mages, because they are non mages and will need it.  The numbers will differ from 1.0 to 2.0 as well.

I am not going to do that.  It's going to be a mage game, focusing on their situation more than anything else.

So either the non-mages hang with the mages at all times, which feels a bit too forced, or they play on their own for periods of time.  Basically I'm trying to see if anyone would enjoy playing characters like that, or if it's not something people would enjoy.

and the starting situation is already set. The entire story revolves around them being relatively inexperienced mages being 'chosen' for this specific sanctum.

the non-mages would likely be a bit more powerful versions of their specific groups, depending on what they are and who they are.  But this game isn't going to focus on mage VS non-mage, or pvp.

and I will be using classic NWOD.

Is it necessary to have non-mages as players?

I mean, if a particular player really wanted to play the werewolf or vampire liaison, just make sure they were aware they would have a more solo role for most of the game.  Let the player decide if they wanted to play that type of character, and if no one bites, leave the non-mages as recurring NPCs.

A thought, allow players 2 characters, 1 Mage and 1 Other Race. That way no one misses out on RP.

It could easily be done if the players who play the non-mages are willing to not have as much face time.  This could be good for folks who want to play in a WoD game but don't necessarily have the time to devote to a full game.  I might do it.

There are ways to have non mages be involved with the cabal, though the ratio of mages should always be higher, yes.

Just to clarify, by NWoD do you mean 1st edition, or the Chronicles edition?

All I'm saying is I want in. As for playing non-Mage in a Mage game I could do that or basically run with the mages.

The whole point of this post was to see if players might find it interesting to play a non-mage in a mage game, that would require them to play solo for portions of the time.  I know some players like completely solo games, so  was I was curious if players might like a game where they are solo but frequently work with the mage group.  That frequency will depend on how the players unfold the story and how they interact.

it isn't necessary to have non-mage players.  I am going to run the mage game whether or not I include non-mages.  If I don't make the non-mages PCs, they will be NPCs the mages frequently interact with.

I won't be doing the two PCs per player idea, because that really hamstrings the interaction between the two groups.

and yes, I plan on using original NWOD, not CWOD.  There isn't a huge difference, but I think the original default is what I am most comfortable with.

In reply to gladiusdei (msg # 9):

Ok, yes, I'm interested, subject to exact details, etc.  This sounds like something I could work with.  Now to think on character.  ;-)
