IC – Mechwarrior (A Time of War)

Before I get into a load of trouble for nothing, would anyone be interested in playing a PC in a campaign that would revolve around the beginnings, middle and endings, of a small merc lance, with the PCs being mechwarriors?

We would be using A Time Of War as our ruleset, the PCs would get a chance to create their merc outfit (I’ll give them the background premise) or I would include them in an already made one if they would prefer (to speed up game start).

More Mechwarrior is never a bad thing.  I'd be interested, sure.

I may be wrong but I imagine you would get plenty of interest in such a thing, including me.

IC – Mechwarrior (A Time of War)

Is this just Mechwarrior, or do you intend to use Battletech as well?  And if so is there an interest in supporting the use of the new Battletech computer game as well?  Either as a way to depict combat or as a sort of in game representation of sport?

Just mechwarrior rpg rules. Using battletech rules would make the game too combat focused since we would be spending years to try and resolve one battle...

As to the pc game, no idea how it could be used for this, also it would probably impose on everyone a need to have it, so I'm now tempted to go that way.

It could be optional, but yes there is a level of complexity one must accept in order to reduce that time problem down to an hour or so per lance vs lance combat.

Re: IC – Mechwarrior (A Time of War)

If there are...six or less PC's total...you can adapt the Battletech side down to where combat can be run quicker.  Most tailored combat won't run past an actual 10ish combat rounds because Mercs don't want to take damage like House Units do.  I've helped run missions like that where if the players are quick posters we get 2 rounds done a week so a month or month and a half of real time will cover a full combat scenario.  You have to have strict posting schedules when combat arrives and have the CO and XO in place that if a player doesn't log to post either they stand there in shock or get moved by the CO/XO and accept it if they can't keep up.

Which for Rpol a full fledged battle in a month and a half real world time isn't a bad speed.

More players than that and it'll get bogged down unless you split them into smaller groupings towards assisting goals that you run simultaneously.  Two three man groups for 6 players or two regular size 4 man groups if there were 8 players.  But if you are aiming for a Merc lance/unit the Battletech side is gonna be a part of the story unless we're infantry.

Re: IC – Mechwarrior (A Time of War)

I'd love to be involved in some Mechwarrior, but I am concerned with AToW.  It feels like a lot of work into character creation for not a lot of output.

Color me interested, but I'd advise looking into other systems.  Mongoose Traveller actually makes a pretty good 1:1 with some lifepath and package massaging.

Re: IC – Mechwarrior (A Time of War)

AToW isn't bad parsay but if you're not familiar with it then it can be time consuming at first.  I'm still a sucker for 2nd Ed MechWarrior since the entire system revolves around the same dice used for Battletech without any real conversions.  May lack the bells and whistles that AToW has but still works.

Regardless looks like you've got more than enough interest.  Enough for two games or more.
