The Story of Soul Eater
Legends say that in this World, Death came before life. Since time and space were forged in the holy flames of Hell, the Earth and its history have been destroyed and recreated by one Great Cataclysm after another in an effort to endlessly improve its Grand Design, until the cycle was broken when eternity reached its end. Improving together with the World around it, Humanity was slowly made aware of the one behind it - The Sun God, who was called the Evangelist. Some chose to side with their Creator, each for their own reasons, but many others chose to rebel against it using the very power it has gifted them. Uniting their will and wielding their souls as one, a new God was born, and the Evangelist was slain at the hand of the one called Shinra-Banshō-Man. Then, with the World saved from destruction, Shinra-Banshō-Man returned to whence it came, leaving the Earth at the hands of another, more primal God - Lord Death, the God of Absolute Order.
But while the World was allowed to thrive free of the Cataclysm, strange beings from outside God’s domain began to arrive on Earth and infest it, beings who were very similar to Humanity, but wielded a power heretofore believed to belong to the Gods alone, the power of Magic. These beings were called Witches, and they began to battle the Humans, experiment on them, and turn them away from God to be worshiped in his stead. Seeing this, Death has decided that the threat of Witches must be eliminated, and he had congregated with his fellow Gods to formulate a plan to defeat them. Before long they have found an unlikely ally in Eibon, a genius Wizard who used to work alongside Arachne Gorgon, the greatest and most dangerous Witch on Earth. Eibon had explained that, inspired by the shapeshifting Deity Excalibur who took the form of a Holy Sword, Eibon and Arachne had experimented on both Humans and their fellow Sorcerers to give Humans the power to transform into Mystic Weapons with Magical abilities, and Humans who wielded them gained incredible power as Meisters. Eibon recorded this knowledge in a Magic Book of his wisdom, The Book of Eibon, which was guarded by The Index, a powerful Divine Spirit he had created. Eibon has shared this knowledge with Death so they can use the Witches’ own creation to finally drive out and destroy them.
Death’s son, Asura, who was born of his own soul, Eibon with The Index by his side, the Gods Excalibur, Poseidon and Cthulhu, Asura’s Demon Cudgel Vajra, and Matasaburou, the Spear of Poseidon, have consolidated into a powerful team of Godly guardians, the Legion of Eight Warlords, who banded together to destroy the Witches around the World. Death himself faced Arachne, fatally injuring her; Although he believed Arachne had succumbed to her wounds, in reality, she had survived by turning her own body into a swarm of spiders that scattered across the world and placing her soul inside a soulless Golem to hide it until she could be resurrected. The truth could not be discovered by anyone but The Index, who decided to keep the secret and create an agent who will capture Arachne and bring her into the Book of Eibon to confront The Index itself. He had created Noah, a Demon taking the form of a Wizard who embodies the Seven Deadly Sins, and will be resurrected as a different Sin whenever he is destroyed. Noah was eventually unleashed into the World without anyone, including Eibon, being aware.
With Arachne seemingly defeated, the Legion of Eight set out to defeat the usurping Witches of the East. Asura arrived in their settlements before any of his subordinates and utterly slaughtered them, killing every man, woman, child and baby and devouring their souls. After discovering this, the other Legionnaires reported to Death about the massacre, and while he commended Asura’s speed and efficiency, the vicious nature of his attack began to raise his concern. While the Witches of the East were all but destroyed, a single infant - Their Crown Princess - Survived the massacre, rescued by Noah, who introduced himself as the Wizard Grimoire. Returning to the Realm of Witches, Grimoire raised the fledgeling Sorceress as his own, trained her in the ways of Magic and named her Ponera.
Back on Earth, Asura’s Madness and hunger for souls would only grow, and he would begin to attack and kill Humans, until he was eventually discovered by his own Weapon Vajra. Afraid of his partner’s retaliation, Asura devoured Vajra whole, merging and absorbing it. But it was to no avail - the other Warlords discovered what Asura was doing and engaged in a great battle with him, a cataclysmic event that shook the World until Death himself was forced to intervene and kill Asura, who was now known as the Demon God. At the wake of calamity, the Eight Legionnaires scattered, the Spear of Poseidon lost, and the Book of Eibon stolen by Noah, who used its power and his own to imprison the Great Old One, Cthulhu, sealing him away within its pages forever.
Death and those still loyal to him decided to pursue a new method of hunting down Witches. After the battle with Asura he discovered an unsettling truth: That some Humans had the ability to eat the souls of one another. Doing this gave them power, but their own souls were tainted, turning into what became known as Demon Eggs. Mystic Weapons had the ability to eat Demon Eggs, Human and Witch souls alike, and Death had decided to found his own school of combat, where he would teach Weapons and Meisters to hunt Witches and those with Demon Egg souls in order to protect the World - Death’s Weapon and Meister Academy, which he built in the deserts of Nevada over the grave that imprisoned his traitorous child.
For hundreds of years, DWMA protected Humanity, and the World was at peace. In the Realm of Witches, however, things were quite different. That strange world, where the laws of nature don’t exist as we know them, was ruled by the Witch Order, with the one leading it being Maba, the Grand Queen of Witches whose power rivals God himself. However, individual powerful Witches had the ability to form their own Cohorts within the Witch Order - Groups akin to noble houses, consisting of any Witch or non-Witch that has the trust of their founder. Ponera, the last of the Witches of the East, founded the Witch Cohort Paraponera with one purpose: To end Death’s reign over Earth once and for all.
And Ponera was far from the only person to seek this cause. Unbeknownst to Death, Arachne Gorgon had two younger sisters - Medusa and Shaula. The middle child, Medusa, planned to create a new Demon God who will destroy Death; Pretending to be a Human nurse within DMWA’s own school facility, Medusa used a combination of science and sorcery to create a substance known as the Black Blood, and later an artificial Demon Weapon, a Blacksword made of pure Black Blood which she named Ragnarök. The Black Blood and Ragnarök were fused into Medusa’s own child, Crona, who was trained by her to become a killing machine that harvests souls. Time after time the Witch sent her child to devour Humans so they can become the next Demon God, but to no avail.
Medusa’s youngest sister, Shaula, sought quite a different method of battling against Humanity and Death. Using a special brainwashing venom she had crafted, Shaula began to control Humans and use them as pawns for The Traitors, her Cohort, which was launching a series of attacks on Death City in which DWMA resides and even brainwashing a number of Meisters and Weapons. Shaula’s strategy initially revolved around trial and error, trying to figure out the limits of her venom and the best strategies to use it, but the increasing number of Traitor incidents grabbed DWMA’s attention, particularly the Weapon Harudori Tsugumi and her Meister Anastasia Yngling, who discovered their close friend and Tsugumi’s substitute Meister Tatane Mei, whom she called Mei-Mei, was a brainwashed sleeper agent, giving DWMA a lead that allowed them to expose Shaula and corner her.
In a last act of desperation, Shaula entered Death City herself with her remaining brainwashed minions, each one armed with poisoned weapons that will spread the venom to anyone who survives their attack. With DWMA’s researcher Viktor Frankenstein having managed to develop an antidote to the brainwashing venom, Shaula decided to use her remaining Traitors as a distraction and retreat to fight another day, only for Anya, Tsugumi and the cured Mei-Mei to confront her head-on. Shaula was able to easily fend off the trio and nearly defeated them, only for Death The Kid, second son of Lord Death who was created long after the war with Asura, to arrive with his own Weapons and attack the Sorceress from behind, allowing Anya and Tsugumi to finish her off with Soul Resonance, making their souls’ energy, their Chi, fuel each other in a positive feedback that increased their power enough to destroy Shaula.
After The Traitors’ defeat, a strange house made of gigantic pumpkins and jack-o’-lanterns appeared inexplicably in London, England. Two of DWMA's top students, Maka Albarn and her Mystic Scythe Sora “Soul Eater” Evans, were sent to investigate; Inside the house lived a beautiful Witch named Blair who, despite appearing like a perverted bubbly bimbo, was actually able to defeat Maka several times over. Soul, being a bit of a pervert himself, decided to trick Blair by pretending to have fallen for her and using it as a distraction to kill and swallow her soul. Having successfully defeated the Sorceress, Soul and Maka returned to Death City only for Blair to reappear and reveal she was not a Witch, but a Therianthrope with Magical powers who could revive herself thanks to possessing multiple souls and follow them to America. Expecting the fight to continue, Soul and Maka were surprised to learn that Blair wanted to be their friend instead, saying they have no reason to kill her since she isn’t a Witch, and that she had always wanted to be a Meister. Although having no desire to be friends with the Changeling, Soul and Maka couldn’t kill her either, and decided to allow her to continue living in Death City anyway.
Learning of her youngest sister’s death through her position as a nurse, Medusa Gorgon knew she had to be cautious continuing to send Crona to hunt souls around the World. It wasn’t until one year after Shaula’s death that Crona was noticed, having massacred a church congregation in Florence, Italy, when their soul was sensed by Maka from a distance. Arriving at the church, Maka confronted Crona and Ragnarök, who swiftly defeated them with the Black Blood’s power and nearly killed Soul. Before the final blow was struck, Professor Stein arrived with his own Weapon - Maka’s father, the Death Scythe Spirit Albarn. The two had defeated Crona with the same ease as Crona defeated Maka, and Medusa herself - Hiding her face and voice - Was forced to intervene and rescue them.
The battle was won, but this mysterious enemy was still at large, and DWMA still knew nothing about them or their identity.
Soul Eater was hospitalized due to his injuries, which were healing at an unusual rate; Some of the Black Blood composing the Demon Weapon that cut him down began to assimilate into Sora’s own blood. The Madness within it infested his soul, taking the form of a Little Oni within his mind and his dreams. Around that time, a rogue Dark Weapon named Nakatsukasa Masamune was plaguing Japan using his ability to possess anyone who held the Fey Blade, his Weapon form. Setting out to destroy him was his younger sister, the Shadow Weapon Tsubaki, and her Meister, the Shinobi assassin Black☆Star. The duo defeated the Fey Blade using Tsubaki’s own special ability, the ability to switch between multiple Weapon forms. Eating her own brother’s soul, the Kunoichi assimilated his form and power, a power that could kill Black☆Star should he fail to learn to control it.
Returning to visit the Realm of Witches, Medusa Gorgon was seeking new allies. A younger Witch named Elluka Fragor confronted her, believing Medusa’s plans may be dangerous to the Witch Order as they are to Humanity. Refusing to reveal her true intentions, Medusa overpowered Elluka physically and planted Light Serpents within her body, Magical lifeforms made of Demonic Energy that could corrupt and infect her will, force Elluka’s body to move on its own, and if all else fails, rip her apart from the inside out. Unable to resist, Elluka had no choice but to submit to Medusa, and the latter wasted no time finding her first task: Releasing from imprisonment a Legendary Man-Wolf who stole the Grand Queen Maba’s eye two hundred years ago and could not be executed because of the Shapeshifter’s immortality. Even after being stripped of his name, he could not die, so he became imprisoned until Elluka found him and convinced him to join Medusa. Agreeing to help those who rescued him, the Therianthrope chose a new name, calling himself Free.
In search of Crona, Maka and Black☆Star arrived at London Bridge where they were attacked by Free. With the Fey Blade’s power, Black☆Star was able to fatally wound the Changeling, only for him to simply regenerate until Black☆Star was too exhausted to use it. Maka attempted to face him along with Sora, but because of his injury he couldn’t synchronize his Soul Wavelength enough to even be wielded by her. With Black☆Star and Soul Eater both out of the fight, Maka was forced to wield Tsubaki in her Kusarigama form; Although the two were unable to resonate, Maka’s resolve manifested into a Demon Slayer Wavelength, a holy power of the soul that pushed the Werebeast back with its spiritual force. Using the power of Maba’s Demon Eye, Free managed to separate Maka from the High Performance Multi-Form Weapon, only for Soul to transform again, having recovered just enough to synchronize his soul with Maka and resonate, activating the Great Traditional Art of the Scythe-Master, Witch Hunt. The Black Blood within Soul made them even stronger and allowed Maka to hurl Free away into the raging rivers below.
Seeing DWMA’s enemies fall one by one, the new Paraponera organization began to make their move. Noah, under the alias of Grimoire, was casting his own mind control spells to compel humans to sacrifice their souls to Ponera’s unique creation, the Soul Cocoons, used to store the power of numerous souls and then turn their bodies into soulless undead thralls, the Paramyres. It wasn’t long before DWMA began to investigate the disappearances and sent Death The Kid to find the source.
Kid and his Weapons, the Twin Guns Liz and Patty Thompson, were confronted by Nals Garnier, a Phantom who excelled at the art of the sword. Believing him to be the cause of the disappearances, Kid defeated Nals and discovered a single Soul Cocoon; The young Death God wished to take the strange object to DWMA to be studied, but as he approached it, a hooded Therianthrope calling himself Alone appeared and stole it. Believing the Shapeshifter to be the mastermind behind the Soul Cocoon, Maka, Kid and Black☆Star were sent to confront him together with Sid Barett, a teacher who was murdered by Mei and Shaula and transformed into a Zombie by Stein, and his Death Knife Mira Naigus. Tracking Alone inside an ancient mansion in Germany, Sid and Maka entered the mansion from different directions to corner him. Maka and Soul Eater found and confronted Alone, but before the others could reach him, a man named Tatari appeared, having been sent by the real mastermind to recover the Soul Cocoon. Using Voodoo Magic to inflict fatal injuries on Sid by destroying enchanted ragdolls, the undead Meister fought on and bought enough time for his students to take Tatari down.
Soul and Maka were fighting Alone and overpowered him using their Black Needle Wavelength that they awakened against his fellow Immortal Free. However, the Faunus was not about to give up, and had devoured the Soul Cocoon to become strong enough to kill them both. Before he could, Kid, Black☆Star and Sid arrived and battled Alone together, with the Zombie using Mira Naigus’ power to confiscate and extract the Soul Cocoon before using his own Soul Resonance technique, Forced Burial, to seal the Immortal Werebeast away in an indestructible coffin. Sid and the others took the Cocoon to DWMA so Professor Frankenstein could study it while Grimoire, the real mastermind, watched from above.
Knowing she has already revealed herself to the genius Frankenstein and is under his suspicion, Medusa Gorgon desired to capitalize on the ongoing conflict with Paraponera by staging her own kidnapping and making it seem like the ones who sent Tatari were the perpetrators. Once again donning her Witch outfit and hiding her face, Medusa allowed herself to be found by Harudori Tsugumi, Anastasia Yngling and Tatane Mei and claimed to be an agent of Paraponera, confirming it to be the force behind Tatari, Nals and the Soul Cocoon. The two students and their Weapon engaged in a fierce battle with the Sorceress, who enlisted Free's aid in using illusion Magic to make her Human disguise appear to be present alongside her Witch self and pretending to be defeated and rescued so that her secret remains safe.
That night, Patchwork Lab - Professor Frankenstein’s private workshop - Was invaded by Paramyres, who dug a tunnel into it in order to retrieve the stolen Soul Cocoon. Soon enough the lab became infested with Paramyres and with Magically-enchanted Monster Ants and Monster Flies, who were controlled by tiny ants lodged in their heads. Ignoring all warnings, the hot-headed Black☆Star barged into Patchwork Lab and began to slaughter Paraponera’s forces in order to reach the tunnel. At the entrance, a massive monster blocked his way - a mechanical creature known as Gigant, who used the Soul Cocoon as a power source. Battling Paraponera’s machine, Black☆Star was forced to once again exhaust his own power with the Fey Blade in order to destroy it.
The tunnel leading to Patchwork Lab from Paraponera’s makeshift underground fort was now exposed, but the defending forces inside were no less fierce than any of the enemies DWMA already faced. Death The Kid and the Thompson sisters were chosen to enter the tunnel and reach its end, where Kid made a terrifying discovery: Paraponera had many more Soul Cocoons on their hands and many more Gigants to wield them. Kid was confronted by the Wizard Grimoire, who used the Book of Eibon to summon terrifying creatures made of smoke, the Hellworms, and sic them upon the young God. Kid defeated the monsters using his Death Cannon, a powerful Soul Resonance attack he initiated by merging Liz and Patty’s Gun forms with his arms, but Grimoire went on to channel the Soul Cocoons’ power, claiming that they grant the power of a Demon God to those wielding them, and face Kid himself. On the verge of losing, Grimoire resorted to entirely absorbing a Soul Cocoon he stored in his Book and easily defeated Kid. Before the Wizard was able to finish him off, Professor Stein and Spirit arrived and used an even more advanced version of the Witch Hunt to kill Grimoire; While Stein and Kid returned to DWMA, believing the fight with Paraponera to be over, the surviving Paramyres salvaged Grimoire’s Magic Book and took it to Paraponera’s real, primary base as proof of his demise to the Cohort's true leader and his former apprentice, the Monotone Princess Ponera.
Somewhere at the Baltic Sea, a haunted ship appeared out of nowhere and began to swallow entire seashore villages whole. Death The Kid and his Weapons were once again sent to stop it and encountered the Ghost possessing the ship, the Flying Dutchman, who revealed he was collecting countless souls in the belly of his ship, the Nidhogg, in order to resurrect the Demon God. Immediately Kid suspected that the Flying Dutchman had ties to Paraponera, believing Crona and the Witch that rescued them were part of it, only for the Phantom to proclaim he did not seek to create a new Demon God, but to resuscitate the original Demon God sealed underneath DWMA, which Kid did not know existed. The two continued to battle when they were suddenly interrupted by Crona and Ragnarök, who instantly beheaded the Flying Dutchman and swallowed every soul he had collected. Kid began to fight Crona but was soundly defeated as Crona destroyed the Nidhogg with the Demon Blacksword’s power and knocked Kid unconscious, forcing Liz and Patty to carry him back to land as Crona formed their Black Blood into a pair of wings and flew away safely.
Just as the repairs to Patchwork Lab were completed, an army of Gigants began to approach Death City led by Ponera herself, riding a simple doll that she fused with and turned into an even larger and more invulnerable monster, the Paragigus. Death The Kid, Maka Albarn, Black☆Star, Tatane Mei, and Blair the Werebeast confronted the Witch together at the edge of the city. With her immense power Ponera could fight all of them at once, but their Soul Resonance, teamwork and strategy allowed them to defeat her in a heated battle. The dying Ponera insisted that although she was defeated, the day DWMA falls is fast approaching and soon they will all know the loss that she knew, before destroying her own soul in a massive explosion that would have killed the brigade of Meisters and Weapons had Death The Kid not used his Godly power to conjure a Miracle and transport them all to safety.
Thanks to the students’ quick action in defeating Ponera and her army, only minimal damage was caused to Death City, and believing the most dangerous enemy is already defeated, the students and teachers in Death's Weapon and Meister Academy were all able to rest easy and celebrate their victory, throwing a large party in the school's halls. While Medusa remained inside, Free, Elluka and a group of six identical Sorceresses named Mizune, who like Elluka were coerced to work for Medusa with her Light Serpents, surrounded DWMA and used a Spatial Magic spell, the Independent Cube, to create a separate space in which they sealed the party-goers so they will not interfere. In the small window of time they gave Medusa herself to leave, Sid Barett and Mira Naigus were able to sense the danger and use Forced Burial to transport Maka, Kid, Black☆Star, Professor Frankenstein and their Weapons out of the spell’s range and into the vault underneath DWMA where Medusa’s army was heading - And where the Demon God’s mutilated corpse has been sealed away.
While the six Mizune were prevented from entering the vault by Blair, who was already outside, Crona stalled Stein until Medusa could arrive before running ahead. Once Medusa arrived, Stein repelled her for just long enough for the students to run past her and confront the rest of her army, which was on their way to the Demon God’s tomb with a large vial of Black Blood to resurrect him with. Determined to get even with Crona for the injury they caused Soul, Maka once again confronted them while Kid and Black☆Star advanced; At Death City, Blair was overpowering the Mizune Witches, only for them to gain the upper hand by merging into one powerful fighter.
The battle between Maka and Crona continued to rage on, with Crona progressively growing stronger while Maka’s strength was dwindling, allowing the Demon Swordmaster to defeat Maka and Soul once more and nearly kill them. Desperate to defeat this opponent, Soul Eater allowed the Little Oni, the embodiment of the Black Blood’s Madness within him, to corrupt both himself and Maka and gain the twisted power of the Black Blood for themselves, severely overpowering Crona.
As they did, however, Maka’s strengthened ability to sense souls allowed her to catch glimpses of Crona’s memory, the memory of someone who was abused since they were born and forced to become a killing machine. Seeing these memories made Maka feel compassion - A strong enough compassion to overwhelm the violent Madness and regain lucidity. With Crona already defeated, Maka decided to spare them, wanting to convince them that they are not the monster their mother wanted them to be, and they can be a good person if they only tried. Crona, knowing they will be killed if they don’t comply, acquiesced to Maka’s demands and was left to recover as she and Soul Eater moved onward.
Casting an illusion of himself to stall Kid and Black☆Star, Free reached Asura’s tomb with Elluka. Although the Demon God was long dead, his body drained of blood and stuffed in a sack fashioned from his own flayed skin, Asura’s Madness was still overwhelming them, making the Witch and Immortal hallucinate the Demon God killing them while they were made to attack themselves. Breaking out of the delusion, Elluka was able to inject an oversized syringe of Black Blood into the sack, resurrecting Asura just when the Independent Cube dissipated.
As the fallen God began to awaken, his Chi radiated across Death City, alerting everyone that he lives again. Medusa began to gloat in victory at the vault’s entrance, but Stein dismembered her with one swing of his Scythe. Kid and Black☆Star arrived at the tomb only for the barely awake Demon God to defeat them just by stretching his skin back to its natural form and the recoil causing his skin to snap like rubber bands and flick the powerful Meisters with massive pressure that shattered their bones in an instant. Fashioning his overgrown skin into a crude robe, Asura flew above ground and away from the vault, interrupting Blair’s fight with Mizune. With the Independent Cube gone, Death himself arrived to challenge the Demon God, but with the power of the Black Blood added to his own, Asura was able to overpower his father and leave Death City.
Once recovering, Death was forced to reveal to his subordinates the truth about the Demon God, carefully omitting the fact Asura was his son. From all across the World, God called for his Death Weapons, the strongest Weapons in the World who achieved full mastery of their Weapon form and Magic, to gather and defeat this reborn threat. Listening to Maka’s pleas and seeing value in Crona’s power, Death allowed them and Ragnarök to become official students at DWMA after confiscating the many souls they have consumed and threatened they would be killed if they did not comply with DWMA and its rules. And underneath the abandoned nest of Paraponera, a new Noah was reincarnated from the Book of Eibon, his unseen creator sensing that the time to fulfill his mission draws near.
For their first mission as a DWMA-approved Meister, Crona was accompanied by Maka and Soul to Loew Village in the Czech Republic, where an ancient mindless Golem went rouge and began rampaging and attacking civilians, supposedly as the result of Asura’s Madness Wavelength beginning to cause natural and supernatural disasters around the World. The two Weapon and Meister duos were welcomed by a man calling himself Sou, who explained the village’s history - Loew Village was primarily populated by Enchanters, Human Magic-wielders that specialize in the creation of Golems, with Sou himself being the best in the village. When the time came to confront the rampaging Golem, Maka was able to sense it hosted within it an extremely powerful soul, something Golems and ancient Golems in particular usually lacked altogether.
Further adding to the confusion, Sou proclaimed that he had waited eight-hundred years for the soul within the Golem to re-emerge, using his Enchanter Magic to steal the bodies of his descendants until Asura inadvertently supplied the thing hiding in the Golem with the power it needed to awaken. Sou proceeded to transform into a Mystic Chainsaw - a Deadly Weapon as large as his own human body, allowing the Golem to wield him and attack Maka, already causing major wounds without even activating the Chainsaw’s engine, a Murderous Wavelength radiating from his soul. Afraid and desperate, Crona and Ragnarök began to block the Golem’s attacks, pushing it back with great power even while stripped of their quarry of souls by Death. Facing the Golem together, Maka managed to slice its skin, only to see its interior was filled with Soul Threads which crawled into her body and paralyzed her from head to toe.
As Maka was out of commission, spiders that had converged from all around the World engulfed the ancient Golem, taking the soul out of it, and formed back into the body of Arachne Gorgon. Introducing herself to the students, the Heretic Sorceress revealed to the students that Sou’s true name was Kutsuzawa Giriko, the first Magic Weapon ever created, and that her own spiders were scattered around the world and could watch everything that has happened, even the deaths of her two sisters. Crona attacked their aunt in desperation, only to be effortlessly stopped and for Giriko, in his Human form, to conjure a Chainsaw blade from his leg, using a higher “Gear” than before to pierce through their barrier of Black Blood. Before he was able to kill Crona, the first Mystic Weapon was stopped in his tracks as the Death Guillotine Justin Law arrived out of nowhere to challenge him.
The Deadly Weapon and Death Weapon, both powerful independent fighters whose prowess eclipsed Maka and Crona, clashed too fast for the two students to see who was winning. Sensing real danger to Giriko, Arachne and the Deadly Chainsaw both retreated; They left behind the Golem to keep Justin occupied and met with their eccentric butler, Mosquito, who would drive the two to the stronghold of Arachnophobia, the cult of Arachne that Mosquito led in her absence. As their leader returned, Arachne vowed to finish what her sisters had started, destroy the Gods of Death and their armies on Earth forevermore.
While DWMA was preparing for war against Demons and Witches, Lord Death and his faculty were making their best attempts to keep the students’ lives and curriculums out of the line. The top students Kid, Maka and Black☆Star were instructed to take off to Paris for a Special Social Studies Field Trip at the Louvre Museum with a lovely stewardess named Sofia guiding them - and with Blair following. Seeing the hardened warriors’ disinterest in simple works of art, Sofia equipped the students - Save Kid, who could breathe underwater - With scuba tanks and took them to a special underwater exhibit: The Spear of Poseidon. As the group of Meisters and Weapons entered the hidden room, a Ghost appeared before their eyes, the Ghost of Matasaburou who was killed in his Weapon form and separated from his Meister, Poseidon. Knowing the existence of the Legion of Eight Warlords was to remain secret, Matasaburou preferred to tell the students just as much as they needed to write their reports and nothing more.
As the Meisters and Weapons returned to the Louvre the morning after, they realized Sofia was gone and her voice began to call them for help. With Black☆Star at the front and Maka behind, the Meisters rushed to her aid only for two of them to vanish as they touched Magical pentacles on the floor that transported them into hidden rooms swarming with Mummy-type Zombies with an owl-like appearance. Seeing Kid and Black☆Star disappear, Maka noticed the pentacle and Blair ran up behind her, warning that the person calling for help was a Witch covering her soul with a special spell, Soul Protect. Having been found out, the stewardess revealed herself and explained that she is a descendant of Sofia Ressa Valk, a formidable Sorceress who was tortured to death in a Witch hunt four hundred years ago, and needed to sacrifice the souls of three Meisters and three Weapons to resurrect her with a special potion, the Magic of Eternity, so they may take vengeance against those who wronged her. Saying she has no ill will towards Maka and her friends, Sofia prepared to finish them off painlessly only for Professor Frankenstein to arrive with Spirit and interrupt her.
While this was happening, Matasaburou’s voice spoke to Maka’s soul, pleading with her to wield his Weapon body in order to defeat this Witch. Possessing his own corpse, Matasaburou landed his power to Maka and allowed her to defeat Sofia with his Godly might. Despite their victory, however, using such power with an inexperienced Meister forced Matasaburou to overexert his soul, which was destroyed along with Sofia.
With the Book of Eibon in hand, Noah arrived at Arachnophobia and offered his services, again refraining from using his true name and instead calling himself “Eibon”. Arachnophobia began to employ technicians and scientists to construct the many powerful Demon Tools whose blueprints were written into the Book in different facilities around the World, and to protect them, they hired a powerful Samurai named Mifune, master of the Infinite Sword Style. Mifune was the guardian of a youngling Witch named Angela, and all he desired in return was for Arachnophobia to provide her with protection and a home. His involvement and the location of one of Arachnophobia’s facilities came to the attention of the Death Bowgun and master intelligence gatherer, Azusa Yumi, who relayed this information to her comrades and superiors. Sid Barett was sent to find and destroy this laboratory and Black☆Star, seeking vengeance for Maka’s paralysis and injuries, came after him. While Sid located the Demon Tools, Black☆Star engaged in combat with Mifune, but the assassin was soundly defeated and Mosquito moved in to finish him off, only for Azusa to obliterate a large portion of his body as Sid destroyed the laboratory and the DWMA team escaped. Mosquito, a member of the mysterious Bloodsucker race, survived the shot and healed himself with his dying subordinates’ blood, but the facility which was one of Arachnophobia’s most vital bases was lost.
While DWMA and Arachnophobia were plotting against one another, Medusa Gorgon, who resurrected herself by transferring her soul into one of her snakes, managed to steal the body of a young child. Through her spiders, Arachne was able to discover this; knowing even she cannot hide from her sister, Medusa instead prompted to meet her upfront. Considering Medusa a traitor, Arachne immediately casted her away, refusing to negotiate and threatening to execute her weakened sister if she remains.
DWMA, on their end, began to collect Demon Tools of their own, starting with the Eternal Spring, a source of infinite energy that was placed in an abandoned train in the Sahara Desert, causing it to go haywire and run uncontrollably at an infinite speed. Arachnophobia was also after the Eternal Spring, having sent an assassin named Kingfisher to retrieve it. In DWMA’s service, Death The Kid eliminated the Kingfisher before taking the Demon Tool with him to Death City, and while Crona was alone and isolated from those claiming to be their friends, the reborn Medusa revealed her presence to her child. Terrified of retribution for their betrayal, Crona began to panic and beg for forgiveness, only for Medusa to reassure them that what they did was a good thing, as Crona can continue to reside in DWMA as a double agent without fear of being hunted down as an enemy. Crona’s first and simplest mission was to locate the hidden vault where DWMA’s Demon Tools are hidden, at which point they ran into Professor Frankenstein’s close friend, the eccentric Death Hammer Marie Mjølnir. Although Marie had prevented them from finding the vault, her kindness as well as her proximity to the already unhinged Frankenstein was an opportunity in Ragnarök and Medusa’s eyes to use Marie against him, convincing her to allow them to visit his home with her and planting a microscopic Light Serpent in his coffee that would not only be used as a listening device once he ingests it, but also serve to manipulate and further deteriorate the genius Meister’s sanity.
While all of this was happening, many of DWMA’s students began to feel more and more left out, unsafe, and suspicious of those around them as looming threats were growing stronger and more numerous. Suffering the most from this atmosphere were those at the bottom of the social ladder, including one student named Kiyoteru Hiro who was known for being a failure at everything he does. Although he suffered from constant bullying and no one agreed to partner with him, Hiro continued to dream of greatness and fame. Seeking relief in the many books in DWMA’s library, Hiro came across tales of a Legendary Blade named Excalibur, who will grant unimaginable power to the chosen Meister who is deemed worthy of wielding him. When Hiro sought out and eventually found the Holy Sword’s home in the Eternal Cave in the British Isles, the truth became clear: Wielding Excalibur’s power was not a matter of worthiness, but of being able to tolerate his obnoxious and arrogant personality - Which for Hiro was nothing compared to the bullying he always suffered. DWMA's faculty, too, was trying to equip their students against the growing number of threats they were facing; To do that, Meisters and Weapons began to learn the art of Chain Resonance - The ability to synchronize not only with one’s Weapon, but all of their allies at once, multiplying their already enhanced power many times fold. This difficult high-level training allowed Black☆Star and Nakatsukasa Tsubaki to first notice a strange entity that dwelled within the latter’s soul - The Fey’s Will, a Spirit manifestation similar to Soul Eater’s Little Oni, who was actively trying to prevent Black☆Star from wielding the Fey Blade’s power; To attain it, he believed, he will need to tame this Demon. The Little Oni himself, using the image of a piano in Soul’s mind, offered to help him master Chain Resonance with its aid by playing music with it, but Soul refused, knowing the piano’s keys radiate insanity.
On a Lost Island somewhere North of Alaska lied Eibon’s greatest creation, the mysterious Demon Tool known only as “BREW”, which Lord Death and Arachne both coveted, each making their own plans to retrieve it. Arachnophobia’s soldiers and DWMA’s Meisters and Weapons will not only have to worry about each other; BREW was protected by a Chronomagnetic field that disrupts Soul Perception and radiowaves, and those who remained within the tempest for too long will be erased from existence and history. Frankenstein and Marie Mjølnir entered the field on their own and left behind the Meisters Stephen Oxford, Kirk Rang, and Kimial Diehl along with their Weapons Henry Howard Éclair, Jacqueline “Jackie O’Lantern” Dupré and the Native American identical twins Fire and Lightning, to guard at the edge against intervening Arachnophobia forces, instructing the Deadly Lantern Jacqueline to send a retreat signal in the event that they would not return in twenty minutes.
Although Stein reassured his students that it would take him no more than five minutes to return with BREW in hand, five minutes turned to fifteen and still he did not return. Maka, Kid and Black☆Star decided to enter the Chronomagnetic field despite the warnings and rescue their teachers; While they were inside, the last five minutes burned up, and Kim and Jackie released their signal for all DWMA forces to depart. While Stein and Marie did not yet perish, the tempest’s unholy Demonic Energy - And the snake inside his body - Were taking their toll on Stein’s sanity and hampering his progression until the three Meisters and their Weapons met up with them, urging their teachers to leave while they use the ten minutes they have left to find BREW themselves. As the teachers left, their students reached the greatest Demon Tool’s supposed location, only to encounter Mosquito who had already seized it. Kid deduced - Correctly - That Mosquito’s time was almost up, only for the Bloodsucker to reveal all he has to do is turn back the clock. Using his own Magic, Mosquito reverted his form into what it was a hundred years ago, negating the Chronomangetic influence and vastly strengthening himself. Determined to obtain BREW no matter the cost, the trio engaged in combat with Arachne’s steward anyway. Declaring he was at his “toughest” a hundred years ago, Mosquito shrugged off their basic attacks with ease, and even using Soul Resonance was difficult as the Demonic Energy of the Chronomagnetic field was disrupting their Chi. With no choice, Sora Evans decided to harness the piano inside his soul and the Black Blood’s power to allow his teammates to initiate a Chain Resonance and defeat Mosquito. Fighting in synch, the team of fighters’ souls grew stronger, allowing Maka’s Demon Slayer Wavelength and Sora’s own Witch Hunt to evolve beyond Witches and achieve the same form Stein and Spirit used to slay Grimoire - A Devil Hunt, which could behead Mosquito in one hit after their teammates wounded and weakened him. Even this was not enough to kill the Bloodsucker, who announced that he can simply transform again in order to defeat them, and even without it they were almost out of time, forcing them to retreat as Mosquito himself left with BREW in his hat. When he returned to Arachnophobia’s stronghold, however, it was discovered that the Demonic Energy made BREW lose its function; Arachne insisted that as long as DWMA doesn’t know it, the Demon Tool will still be extremely valuable. Elsewhere still, Elluka and Mizune reported to Medusa with the real, functional BREW, which they preemptively stole and replaced with a fake before Arachnophobia and DWMA’s forces even arrived at the Lost Island.
To study the Demon Tools already in the vault and their purpose, Lord Death hired a skilled technician and investigator named Buttataki Joe. His purpose did not end there, however; Due to Stein succumbing to Madness despite the presence of Marie Mjølnir’s Healing Wavelength, Death began to suspect there was a mole inside DWMA, and Joe was intended to find and apprehend them. The man had incredible Soul Perception that allowed him to see through a Witch’s masking of her soul and to see things hidden inside the souls of others like the Little Oni. Knowing the danger of exposure is greater than ever, Medusa gave Crona and Ragnarök the order to flee from DWMA immediately; They got exactly the distraction they needed as Buttataki Joe himself was suddenly found dead without warning.
While DWMA, its students and faculty were plunging further and further into chaos, so was the rest of the World. Soldiers of Arachnophobia, Evil Humans possessing Demon Eggs and deadly Monsters were more prevalent than ever before, and Maka Albarn, wanting to take one challenge at a time, decided to embark on a simpler-than-usual mission investigating a strange factory that appeared in Russia out of nowhere. With Blair the Werebeast at her side, Maka was attacked by the Flying Dutchman, who survived his ship’s destruction at Ragnarök’s hands and was able to reconstruct it into the Nidhogg Monster Factory, which would harvest Asura’s Madness and Ectoplasm and shape it into a monstrous being, The Clown. While the Immortal Faunus Blair engaged the Flying Dutchman himself, The Clown began to launch a psychic assault on Maka and Soul with its own Madness Wavelength. Overcoming The Clown’s Madness with his piano and Maka’s holy Black Needle Wavelength, Maka once again unveiled Devil Hunter and sliced it in half. Wielding the entire Nidhogg Monster Factory as his weapon, the Flying Dutchman desperately retaliated only for Blair to tag him from behind and destroy his soul. With the vengeful Ghost's demise, his factory was destroyed leaving behind only the Clown's soul, which then turned out to be a decoy containing a message revealing that the Demon God has been watching DWMA and knows one of its best students, Kimial Diehl, was a Witch in disguise.
Once this information has been relayed, Kim immediately ran away with her Weapon, who knew the secret and remained at her side. Neither of them wished harm to DWMA; Kim was banished from the Realm of Witches long ago and was genuinely loyal to Death, but this mattered not. If any faculty members see them now, they’ll both be executed on the spot, no questions asked. Seeing the Witch’s fear and despair, Arachne sent Mosquito to find Kim and Jackie, offering them protection and promising they’ll never have to fear being hunted down for who they are if they only agree to join Arachnophobia. Kim was suspicious that Mosquito, too, will kill her if she doesn’t comply, and although he denied it, the Sorceress and her Weapon surrendered anyway. As they did, the two former DWMA students were subjected to testing the Morality Manipulation Machine, a Demon Tool from the Book of Eibon that was meant to remove its victims’ morals; Arachnophobia intended to use it to construct a Madness Amplifier Device that will focus the Demon God’s Madness and spread across the World through six Madness Relay Base devices located in the Antarctic tundra, the dunes of Australia, the Mayan pyramids of America, Mount Vesuvius, the Great Wall of China and the Bermuda Triangle. At that time where DWMA seemed more vulnerable than ever, Medusa Gorgon revealed herself and surrendered to Lord Death, claiming they have a common enemy in her sister and offering them the location of Arachnophobia’s headquarters. Revealing where she has hidden the real BREW to prove her authenticity, Medusa claimed that Crona was abducted by Arachne and she wished to assist DWMA against her in order to rescue her child, but she will not agree to tell their location unless they promise to no longer target her. Medusa also demanded to be left in charge of a small brigade of students who will infiltrate Arachnophobia’s stronghold, the Baba Yaga Castle located at the Amazon River Basin, from the inside while DWMA launches its offensive from outside. Knowing Medusa didn’t pose anywhere near the threat level of Arachne, Lord Death acquiesced to her demands. Operation: Capture Baba Yaga Castle was about to begin.
