Player Posting Guidelines

Player Posting Guidelines

You can post in 1st or 3rd person, past or present tense, whatever makes you most comfortable. I am not picky in this regard. As long as I can understand what you want to do, I am fine. If you wish to color your dialogue or leave it in plain black, italicize your thoughts, that's up to you as well. Once you start, do be consistent. Don't color your dialogue differently with each post. Do your best to follow the rules of grammar, spelling, and syntax so I can correctly interpret your prose and know exactly what you wish to do.

THE SECOND PARAGRAPH COMING UP IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND OFTEN FORGOTTEN. LET ALL THESE RIDICULOUS CAPITAL LETTERS SERVE AS A MEANS OF NOT FORGETTING.

Please, the important thing to me is... in each post give me something more than a simple one or two line sentence to work with. There's nothing more discouraging for a PbP GM than to write a massive paragraph or three, and to have the player respond with one or two skinny little lines.

Even though this is a solo game:

I. Develop your PC's personality in his IC posts (he's quirky, a wit, flamboyant? Work it into your posts).

II. Work their background into your posts (Your character is a shamus in a world of elves, dwarves, minotaurs, and marvels. How did he/she get there? The current post likely reminds the character of something. Let's hear about it).

III. Make your posts interesting and entertaining to read.

IV. Do not give me flat, bland responses that address the current situation succinctly. Give me your thoughts, your ideas, your hunches. Tell me why are you doing what you're doing. Maximum verbosity is the order of the day.

V. If I'm consistently getting posts from you that are brief, eventually I will prod you to do more.

VI. Seriously, do not just simply respond to the post in the most terse words and sentences imaginable.

VII. Re-read points I-VI, with particular attention to V and VI.

I, the GM, wish to be entertained by you, the player, as much as you wish to be entertained by me. Thank you.

Once play commences, post a minimum of once per day, more is preferred, Monday-Friday. Posting over weekends is fine and encouraged, but optional. I will match the speed of the player's posts.

It also helps tremendously if you’ve built-up a pattern of posting M-F so that when you do miss that random Wednesday two months down the road, I know it’s not going to be an issue for the rest of the game.

Without trying to sound incredibly hard-nosed about it, this IS a rule. If you can't or don’t intend to post a minimum of once per day, M-F, please do not join. I understand things come up and you can’t post on that random Wednesday, but a notice and a pattern of consistent posting for a couple of months goes a long way before you start missing a day here and there.

I do issue reminders if I haven’t heard from you in a couple of days and if you’ve offered no reason for your absence. I’ve had to remove players from games in the past for not abiding by this rule that I clearly state up front, and then warn them about after multiple offenses. Despite this, some seem shocked when I eventually do remove them. Don’t be shocked.

The game has to always, continually, be moving forward. It's proven to be the best method for not only completing adventures in a PBP format, but also for players to stay focused and recall clues that help win the day.
