Hm, interesting. I wonder if anyone is gonna go for a magic user. Magic users aren't really my bag, except maybe the sorcerer. But I do prefer melee characters.

How does the carrying capacity rules work for this version? No use going shopping and finding that I can not carry it all.

You can carry 60LBs without being encumbered. After 60LBs your movement rate decreases. Its hard work getting to 60 pounds with the starting gear lol.

Getting closer to a finished state:

A self-proclaimed / publicly denounced outer-outer disciple of the 'Eightfold Path Immortal Mural' monastic order. Founding, foremost (and sole) practitioner of the Rug Beating Palm fighting arts.

Earmarked for future eremeticism, her early life was spent abandoned to the wilds. A young and yet-unnamed Ketsuyuki struggling tooth and literal nail for base subsistence. Those savage boons her ill-omened blood bestowed providing for her.

In time and with a footrace she would forfeit to a spry and startled deer the temple grounds were eventually discovered. Gazing for the first time on a human face not reflected back on her from still water. The strangers within became a cautious obsession the then abbot allowed her. Ketsuyuki picking the bones of their morning mantras clean until she herself had a mouth full of language and joining in the 'games' by which a body becomes a weapon.

The name--meaning bloody snow--was a gift granted by those that wished to insult her for her heritage and wild ways. Though she proved impervious to such nuance.

Leadership eventually passed hands within the sect, and the new head had no love of a half-damned hermit aping their esteemed traditions. He and his eldest disciples beating Ketsuyuki with iron-handled brooms when she sought to attend the forebearer's funeral. Striking her about the legs and hands until she was driven out before them.

And for those heavily armored Bushi / Samurai I think the book does mention a bit about Strength Modifiers / Traits that involve porting heavy loads increase that limit a good 20 pounds per point!

"...if your hero has a Strength of 13 and a trait of “Former slave laborer: 2”, she could carry 120 pounds on her mighty shoulders without being slowed."

Done!

Pretty sure my character sheet / description are table ready! Just need a name change to Ketsuyuki and we're ready to go.

Insofar as initial goals go, how about 'Seek Nirvana" as something to strive for? Could start off with a hardship laden pilgrimage or darkening the doors of a local Dojo in a bid to broaden her martial insights.

Sure that could work, though perhaps the secret teachings of the legendary Wu-Sorcerer, Lan Yu, might also allow a person to find nirvana and enlightenment. Just need to find them - and I'm sure they might be somewhere on this wild isle...

Hello everyone! It seems as though most of you are looking at being martial characters so I will be picking up some of the more esoteric arts. As the placeholder (maybe) name indicates.

I look forward to gaming with all of you!

Very nice!

The magic user / cleric stuff seems fun. But I think the other classes get more of 'this is why I want to play the class' baked in at level 1. Which may be why we have a lot of martials out the gate. Though that just might be my take on it.

Maybe. Though I'd prefer to blaze a trail than tread in Lan Yu's footsteps. (Admittedly I probably should've clued in a little closer to the fact Kai Besil would be our canvas, given the game's eponymous title. :P) Had leaned into Hermit imagining my character wouldn't visit the same town twice, only now remembering Talamau to be the one and only. (Though still, shunning it might be a fun challenge.)

Silver lining: as a happy little accident I kind of made someone unintentionally suitable for an uncharted, unsettled hex-crawl. And just before I pop out post number one in the IC thread I wanted to touch base on Ketsuyuki's traits in play, seeing as the book suggests us being of the same page about them.

Enlightened Hermit: Philosophizing, riddling, wilderness survival, mental discipline, niche lore concerning nirvana & the will of heaven. Very much a staple of Asian folklore. Ala the hermit in the tale of The Tiger's Whisker. In archetype think: Zarathustra, the pillar hermits of late antiquity, Meti-ten-Ryo from Kill Six Billion Demons, etc.

Infernal Heritage: The fun other side of the coin called Ketsuyuki. Dilute expressions of her damned heritage, and probably applicable to cavorting amongst said demons or the rites surrounding them. Where full fledged infernals are granted outright immunities to certain obstacles/perils she merely enjoys a little leg up against them. Knowingly drinking poisoned wine would be as on brand for her as it would for Rasputin.

Monk Reflexes: Baked into the class. Representing their ability to jump and leap and tumble like the best acrobat or circus performer. Narrow in scope compared to a Samurai/Shugenja's Clan or Ninja's archetype but broadly useful to navigate almost any adventure.

Loving everyone's intro posts so far, and more of the village opening up as each reply comes in. I'd been imagining Talamau as too small and remote to have a proper Inn or Tavern, so I'm eager to see where Isamu's search for libations lands him. Either establishing the existence of a local watering hole or laying out where and how the hard working locals liquor themselves up
